Classification and Distribution of the Soils Formed under Arid Terrestrial Ecosystem

The objectives of the study are to determine soils, formed on the arid terrestrial ecosystem conditions, on different parent materials and different topographical conditions, classify according to the Soil Taxonomy and the World Reference System and mapping. The study area was carried out Ayrancı district of Karaman province is about 687 km2 and located between 577076 m - 596768 m east and 41541331 m - 4174001 m north. Elevation of the study area locates between 991 m and 1774 m from sea level and long term annual average precipitation and temperature are 330.8 mm and 12 ºC. According to Newhall simulation model, soil temperature regime is mesic and moisture regime is weak aridic. Digital topographic map, satellite images, ortophoto, geology maps were used as base data. After examination of digital data sets and following land observation, 47 profiles were excavated and described Soils were sampled from each horizon to determine their some physical and chemical properties in the laboratory. By assessing the results of analyses and field studies, six different sub groups were determined according to Soil Taxonomy. Three of them were classified as Entisols due to no any description horizon except for ochric epipedon called as their young age located on alluvial deposits and steep slope while, others are classified as Aridisols. These soils were also classified basing on WRB system as Regosol, Leptosol and Fluvisol. According to soil mapping study, Aridisols have 28.1% areal coverage whereas, 71.9% of the study area is covered by Entisols.
